The first page of the history of the South American Games was written in the bolivian altitude of Peace (with sub-offices in Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra), between days 3 and 12 November 1978. The Games Cruz del Sur (original denomination of the South American Games) were disputed by eight countries: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay and Uruguay. They were attended by a total of 480 athletes who competed for medals in 16 modalities: Athletics, Basketball, baseball, boxing, cycling, equestrian, fencing, Football, artistic gymnastics, judo, lifting of weighs, struggles, swimming, tennis, shooting and volleyball. Argentina is he excelled, ending the competition with 91 gold medals and 189 in total. The second position in the table of medals, occupied it Chile, with 31 gold medals, followed by Bolivia with 20 gold medals.
